A mindset is a narrative we tell ourselves which defines what we perceive as reality. The set of collective realities become our cultures. Narratives, realities, and cultures are influenced by values. Values are identified with agency, freedom, and responsibility. Values-based decision-making expands individual, organizational and collective well-being[1] as it creates the lives that individuals have a reason to value.
In our fast pace world, many of the narratives we live by have been constructed by others for us; by the media, by the government, and by the institutions that surround us. The quest for developing a new mindset begins with sense-making and ownership-gaining of the narratives we tell ourselves. The ownership and control of the narratives will emerge from the identification of the things we value and the set of values we hold. Values are the raw materials that construct our thoughts. Values then need to be attached to the reality the individual wants to create and the identity the individual was to form.
In a similar manner, for an organization to develop a mindset of sustainable-restorative-regenerative practices, there is a need to begin by the identification of the values of the individuals that make the organization. A bottom-up approach to understanding why sustainability is essential for the individual and where the organizational strategic objectives for sustainability match the induvial identities.
In order to identify those values linked to sustainability-restorative-regenerative practices there is a need to demystify the concepts, support the individuals to develop self-understanding, and make it obvious, personal, manageable, and rewarding[2].
